Local tips for travelers

  • Many Japanese restaurants and shrines have weak indoor signal — a 4G/5G eSIM with hotspot helps when you're moving fast between locations.
  • Google Maps + transit cards (Suica/PASMO in your Apple/Google Wallet) work flawlessly on local networks once your eSIM is active.
  • Free Wi-Fi at airports (Haneda, Narita, Kansai) is good for the initial eSIM install if you forgot to set it up at home.
  • Activate data roaming on the eSIM line in Settings after you land — without that toggle, the eSIM won't pick up the Japanese network.

Best season: Spring (Mar–May) for cherry blossoms; Autumn (Oct–Nov) for foliage.

Japan eSIM — Frequently Asked Questions

Does the eSIM work all over Japan, including Hokkaido and Okinawa?+

Yes. Plans run on Japan’s nationwide carriers, so coverage extends from Hokkaido to the southern Okinawa islands. Speeds may dip in remote mountain or sea routes, as with any local SIM.

Can I tether / use hotspot in Japan with this eSIM?+

Most of our Japan plans support hotspot. The plan page indicates whether tethering is included before you buy. If it's important for you, look for plans marked with hotspot support.

Will my iPhone bought in China or Hong Kong work with a Japan eSIM?+

iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao generally do not support eSIM (except 13 mini, 12 mini, SE and XS). Models bought in other markets are fine. Check our compatibility tool before purchase.

What about staying for more than 30 days in Japan?+

For longer trips, choose a 30-day plan and purchase another for the remaining days, or pick an unlimited monthly plan. Top-up may also be available depending on the plan.
